Best time to go

  • Winter (November - February) is the time for Aurora chasing
  • Summer (Jun - August) is great for outdoor activities The whale-watching season normally starts in April
  • Spring (March-May) is a good time for bird-watching. Puffins breeding season normally lasts from late April to early September

Good things to know

  • The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most popular route, highlights include Gullfoss Waterfall, Geyser, and Þingvellir National Park
  • There are many factors affecting the chances of seeing the Northern Lights, such as cloud type, height, thickness and light pollution. We highly recommend taking a professional guided tour as it will maximise your chances of seeing them. You can also check out our blog posts on how to photograph the Northern Lights using both digital cameras and mobile phone
  • Black Sand Beach’s sneaker waves are dangerous so please do not ignore the safety warnings If you want to scuba dive in Silfra (where you can dive between continental plates), you must be dry suit certified. Otherwise, you can take a snorkel tour in a dry suit
  • Húsavík is the whale-watching capital of Europe - the season is between April and November 60% of the world’s puffin population nests in Iceland over spring and summer
  • Please keep a safe distance on puffin-watching tours
