Best time to go

  • Spring (April to June) and summer (July to August) are both lovely times to visit Romania and are good for outdoor activities and city breaks
  • Autumn (September to November) foliage is great for photography, wine tasting in regions like Transylvania and Moldavia, and traditional harvest festivals and cultural celebrations
  • Winter (December to February) can be great for skiing and snowboarding, offering a cheaper alternative than some Western European destinations

Good things to know

  • The official currency is the Romanian Leu, although some tour operators may price the tour in Euros
  • If you are going to mountain regions, pack accordingly and anticipate sudden changes in weather
  • Romania is a great destination for outdoor activities and wildlife spotting. Popular outdoor destinations include the Transylvanian Alps, the Danube Delta, and the Carpathian Mountains
  • The Transfagarasan Road, with its spectacular hairpin turns, is considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world
  • Tipping is normal in Romania for good service
