Best time to go

  • Spring (March to May) is the shoulder season, but is great for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and birdwatching, as nature awakens from the winter months
  • Summer (June to August) is the peak tourist season in Sweden, with long daylight hours and mild temperatures. It's perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, mountain biking and sailing in the Stockholm Archipelago
  • Autumn (September to November) is a beautiful time with colourful foliage and fewer crowds. It's perfect for hiking in national parks like Abisko and Tiveden, as well as exploring charming towns and villages
  • Winter (December to February) is great for winter sports and seeing the northern lights in northern Sweden. Abisko  in Swedish Lapland is voted by Lonely Planet as the best place to see the Northern Lights

Good things to know

  • The currency is the Swedish Krona (SEK)
  • You can access great outdoor activities not far from the Swedish capital, Stockholm. Take the time to explore national parks like Sarek and Fulufjället, where you can hike, camp and spot wildlife like moose and reindeer
  • Some activities are seasonal, so check before your trip. This includes summer closures of many restaurants
  • If you are camping, be mindful of any fire bans
  • If you are not experienced in the wilderness, a guided tour is the best option for outdoor activities in remote areas
  • Tipping is always welcome, but not expected
