Best time to go and Good things to know
Best time to go
- Spring (April to May) is a popular time to visit the Netherlands when the famous tulip fields are in full bloom. Keukenhof Gardens near Amsterdam are a must-visit during this time. The weather is mild, and there are fewer tourists compared to the summer months
- Summer (June to August) is the peak tourist season in the Netherlands, with longer days and warmer temperatures. It's ideal for exploring cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht, as well as enjoying outdoor activities like cycling, boating, and visiting the beaches along the North Sea coast
- Autumn (September to November) is a lovely time with fewer crowds, and the weather is still pleasant. You can experience the changing colours of the leaves in parks and forests
- Winter (December to February) is the least crowded time with lower prices
Good things to know
- The weather in the Netherlands can be unpredictable, with mild summers and cool winters. Be prepared for rain at any time of the year, and pack accordingly with layers and waterproof clothing
- Amsterdam is excellent for bikes, and it is popular for tourists to hire a bike to explore the city. You can normally keep the bike for the day if you take a bike tour in the morning
- Dutch people are known for their directness and pragmatism, which may come across as rude in some cultures
- Coffee shops are permitted to sell cannabis under certain strict conditions. A coffee shop is an establishment where cannabis is sold, but no alcoholic drinks are sold or consumed. This is part of the Dutch policy of toleration. The Dutch authorities do prosecute all other forms of possession, sale or production of soft or hard drugs
