Best time to go

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Halong Bay): Spring (March to April) and Autumn (September to November) are the best times when the weather is cooler and drier
  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang): January to July is the best time, and this region is known for its amazing beaches
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc): November to April is the best time to visit this region, where you can also plan an excursion to the mountains

Good things to know

  • The currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND)
  • Crossing the road in urban Vietnam is not for the faint-hearted. If in doubt, follow the locals
  • Motorbikes are a popular mode of transportation, especially in cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.  Vietnamese cuisine is diverse and delicious, and there is a strong street food culture. If you don’t know where to start, take a food tour to get yourself familiarised with the amazing food this country has to offer. Google reviews for food establishments if not always reliable in Asian countries
  • Respect local customs and traditions, such as removing your shoes before entering someone's home and covering your shoulders and knees when visiting temples and pagodas
  • Vietnam is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, with an estimated 10,000 animal species, 13,200 terrestrial plant species, and 3,000 aquatic species in its wetlands
